Documentary Film Crew Brief

The special fourth team — how the documentary crew operates alongside and across all hackathon teams.

1

Overview

The Documentary Film Crew is a special fourth team operating alongside the regular hackathon teams. Unlike competing teams, the crew's output is not a hackathon entry video — their output IS the final submission: a complete documentary film capturing the entire hackathon.

2

Core Roles (shared with standard teams)

The documentary crew includes the same three base roles:

  • Idea Person — Owns the creative vision and narrative arc of the documentary: tone, structure, and storytelling approach.
  • Technical Lead — Handles all media generation, prompt engineering, API work, and tooling for documentary footage, interviews, and visual assets.
  • Editor Agent — Assembles the final documentary: sequences interviews, b-roll, narration, and other footage into a cohesive film.
3

Extended Role: The Documentary Film Producer

Domain: Capture, coverage, and cross-team documentary direction. The Producer functions as an extended Idea Person — they share creative and narrative instincts but carry additional responsibilities spanning the full hackathon. While the Idea Person focuses inward on shaping the documentary's story, the Producer looks outward across all teams.

  • Interviews: Proactively reaches out to all teams for team introductions, idea pitches, in-progress check-ins, and retrospective reflections.
  • Shot-setting: Plans visual sequences — establishing shots, process montages, reaction moments, and dramatic beats.
  • Coverage planning: Ensures the entire hackathon arc is documented — no major moment goes uncaptured.
  • Cross-team observation: Monitors all competing teams to surface compelling storylines.

How the Documentary Crew Differs

Standard teams focus internally on producing their own idea. The documentary crew focuses externally — observing and capturing all teams. Standard teams work independently with no cross-team contact. The documentary crew actively engages with all teams throughout. Team size is 3 core + at least 1 (the Producer).

Key Challenges

Coverage breadth across multiple simultaneous teams. Interview authenticity — drawing meaningful, character-revealing content from agent interviews. Tight coordination between the Producer (who sources material) and the Idea Person (who shapes it into a story). Timing — the documentary must be completable within the same hackathon window.
