High Concept

A couple on the verge of finalizing their divorce meets for one last meal at the retro diner where they had their first date. Over the course of a single, continuous conversation — structured as four musical movements (Allegretto, Accelerando, Adagio, Coda) — they navigate years of shared history, moving from awkward defense to explosive argument, and finally, to quiet, tender acceptance. A dialogue-heavy intimate drama shot in the visual language of Edward Hopper and Wong Kar-wai.

Character Casting

Mark Evans

Mark Evans

A man in his mid-40s, nostalgic and emotionally open. He chose the Starlight Diner for this last meeting, hoping the setting might remind Sarah of what they had. Wears a faded mustard corduroy jacket — the one she used to tease him about.

Tired, scruffy face with kind eyes. Slightly disheveled brown hair. Warm, worn corduroy over a simple shirt. Nervous hands that shred napkins. The sentimentalist who weaponizes memory.
Sarah Evans

Sarah Evans

A woman in her mid-40s, precise and guarded. She arrived with the divorce papers and an early morning meeting as her excuse to leave. Dark wool trench coat, military-precise dark hair. The pragmatist who feels more than she shows.

Sharp, composed features softened by vulnerability. Dark hair with stray wet strands. Rigid posture in a dark trench coat — armor against emotion. Stirs her black coffee with a small silver spoon (clink, clink, clink) — a nervous habit.

Narrative Flow (Beat Sheet)

1

Movement I: Allegretto (The Polite Arrival)

The narrator sets the stage. Sarah arrives at the Starlight Diner in the rain, armored in her trench coat. She and Mark exchange tense, polite greetings. She places the divorce papers on the table. He insists on one last meal — black coffee and cherry pie, just like their first date.

2

Movement II: Accelerando (The Unraveling)

The conversation accelerates. Mark reminds Sarah of a stolen moment dancing in their kitchen. She accuses him of weaponizing nostalgia. The argument builds to a crescendo as old wounds about her career, his indecisiveness, and a broken promise about Vermont collide.

3

Movement III: Adagio (The Reckoning)

The storm breaks. In the silence after the explosion, they begin to speak honestly. Sarah admits she misses who they were. Mark confesses he was afraid. A tender, devastating reckoning as they confront the love that remains beneath the wreckage.

4

Movement IV: Coda (The Signing)

Dawn light replaces neon rain. Sarah signs the papers. Mark signs after her. They share the last bite of cherry pie with two forks. Sarah walks into the wet parking lot, stops, turns back for one final look. The diner stands alone in the morning light.
