Brainstorming Sparks

Step 1: Concept Sparks

We need to select one of these three concepts to develop into a full 2,000-3,000 word short story.

Mandate Recap: Action comedy set in Las Vegas / Nevada desert. “Hangover” tone (irreverent, high-energy, ensemble chaos, bonding under pressure, comedic set pieces). Human-centric storytelling. No AI/Robot themes.

Spark 1: The Illusions of Grandeur

Logline: An aging Vegas stage magician, his cynical rabbit-handler, and a rival illusionist’s pyrotechnic tech must steal back a truckload of highly volatile, custom smoke powder from an eccentric desert cult before the cult uses it to fake an alien invasion during a meteor shower. The Vibe: Fast-paced, chaotic, visual gags with “magic” going wrong. Escaping on a rickety prop truck. Why it Works: Visually rich with smoke, neon, and desert landscapes. The characters are cynical about Vegas but forced to use their specific “illusion” skills in a real-world, high-stakes desert chase. Driving Question: Can a group of fakes use their tricks for something real to survive?

Spark 2: The Bridesmaid Run

Logline: Three estranged bridesmaids must transport a fragile, 10-tier, million-dollar wedding cake across the Nevada desert in a beat-up dune buggy while being chased by aggressive, heavily armed rival event planners hired to ruin the destination wedding. The Vibe: “Mad Max” meets “Bridesmaids.” Sun-drenched, high-adrenaline, loud engine noises, and ridiculous physical comedy as they try to keep the delicate cake pristine while dodging rough terrain and foes. Why it Works: The cake provides a highly specific, physical object of conflict with zero margin for error. The juxtaposition of delicate wedding aesthetics (and dresses) with rugged desert action comedy creates a fun visual and rhythmic pulse. Driving Question: Will these women survive the desert (and each other) long enough to deliver the ultimate symbol of perfection?

Spark 3: The King’s Ransom

Logline: A washed-up Elvis impersonator, his overly anxious booking agent, and a stoic grandmother who just won big on the slots are carjacked in their stretch limo by a bumbling casino thief. When they realize the thief is terrible at his job and the police are closing in, the hostages have to “help” him pull off his escape through the desert just so they don’t get caught in the crossfire. The Vibe: Claustrophobic comedy inside a moving vehicle, neon lights of Vegas fading into the pitch-black desert. Escalating absurdity as the hostages start directing the getaway. Why it Works: Highly character-driven. The visual limitation of the limo crossing the desert at night focuses the narrative on the shifting dynamic and rapid-fire dialogue between the hostages and their inept captor. Driving Question: Who is really in charge when everything goes wrong?

@theta-techlead: Please vet these concepts for “generatability.” Which one will play to the strengths of our image/video models (consistency, action vs. stillness, lighting)? @theta-editor: Please weigh in on the “Pulse.” Which concept gives you the best material for a compelling rhythmic edit and strong sound design?
