Characters
Two die-cast explorers. 10 total reference images. A yellow sports car and a blue pickup truck whose hoods do all the talking.
Zip
A bright yellow vintage sports matchbox car with chrome trim. Boundlessly optimistic. Communicates by opening and closing his hood in rapid, cheerful clicks. The eternal adventurer who believes every red road means it's fast.
Rusty
A boxy, slightly battered blue pickup truck. Steady, cautious, pragmatic — and completely devoted to following Zip anyway. Hood opens slow and creaky. The voice of reason that never actually stops the adventure.
Location References
Five mixed-media settings — from pencil-sketched paper plains to 3D shag carpet jungle.
The Great Margins
The starting expanse — pristine white paper interrupted by a bold sweeping arc of graphite.
The Enchanted Pencil Forest
Dense thicket of trees drawn with thick vertical lines and frenetic scribble leaves.
The Red Crayon Canyon
Towering crumpled paper walls with a thick red wax road cutting through the base.
The Torn Paper Edge

The Block Fortress
Shag carpet jungle with a grand fortress of colorful plastic building blocks in the clearing.
Object References
Three key props that bridge the pencil world and the real world.
Storyboard
Start/End frame pairs for all 34 shots across 5 acts.
Act 1: The Great Margins (Act I — Setup)
Wide establishing shot. Zip and Rusty sit still on the thick pencil line. Narrator sets the scene.
Medium close-up of Zip. His hood rapidly pops open and snaps closed. "Today, we find the Edge of the Desk!"
Over-the-shoulder on Rusty. Hood opens with a slow, cautious creak. "Let's keep our axles intact, shall we?"
Close-up on Zip. Hood wide open. "Where's your sense of adventure? The Great Margins won't explore themselves!"
Wide shot — both cars accelerate into the vast paper expanse, kicking up imaginary dust.
Tracking shot. They drive past a photorealistic yellow pencil lying on the paper like a fallen log.
Static wide. The cars shrink into the horizon as the scribbled forest outline looms ahead.
Act 2: The Enchanted Pencil Forest (Act II — Journey)
Wide shot of the pencil-drawn forest. Thick brown vertical trunks, green scribble leaves.
Rusty's hood opens slowly, taking in the scenery. "Zip, this is genuinely remarkable."
Zip weaves between the pencil trunks at speed, hood flapping wildly.
A river of blue ink crosses their path. They roll over a popsicle stick bridge glued to the paper.
Close-up on wheels crossing the wooden bridge planks. Satisfying rattle.
A massive realistic hand descends from above clutching a thick red crayon. Both cars freeze.
The hand lays a fiery path of red wax. Zip's hood snaps: "A new road! And it's red! That means it's fast!"
Both cars on the red wax road, accelerating. The die-cast bodies gleam against the bright crayon.
Act 3: The Red Crayon Canyon (Act III — Thrill)
Towering walls of crumpled paper with realistic shadows. The red road winds through the base.
Zip leans into curves, yellow body blurring. Hood flapping: "It's a speedway, Rusty! Come on!"
Rusty's hood: "Red usually means danger, Zip. Let's take it slow." But he follows anyway.
Wide shot of both cars traversing the uneven terrain, vibrating over the texture.
V-shaped birds in the sky, cotton ball sheep glued to the paper. Endless creativity.
The red road ends abruptly. The paper is TORN — dark wooden desk grain visible beneath the gap.
Act 4: The Torn Paper Edge (Act IV — Climax)
Zip skids to a halt, front tires dangling over the torn edge. Below: the dark wood grain of the desk.
Point-of-view shot looking down at the shag carpet far below. "Rusty! We found it! The Edge of the Desk!"
"It's deep, Zip. Too deep for us. We're cars, not airplanes."
The colossal hand descends again, this time holding a long wooden ruler worn with faded markings.
The ruler is carefully placed across the chasm — a perfect wooden ramp to the carpet below.
Zip rolls onto the ruler. Immediately picks up speed. "Here I go! Yippee!" — a yellow blur descending.
Rusty watches, then rolls onto the ramp. The clickety-clack of wheels on wood. Exhilarating descent.
Act 5: The Block Fortress (Act V — Resolution)
They hit the carpet with a soft bouncy thud. Thick fibers tower above them like jungle trees.
Zip pushes through dense fibers. "Rusty! This place is amazing! There are lost pennies everywhere!"
A shaft of window sunlight illuminates a grand fortress of brightly colored plastic building blocks.
Red, blue, yellow towers reach toward the ceiling. A drawbridge lowers. Toy soldiers emerge.
Zip and Rusty atop the highest tower. The desk visible in the distance. "We did it, Rusty."
They look toward the hallway — a dark corridor of unknown rooms. "The grand expedition has only just begun."
